Like many collectors, my whisky journey began with curiosity — exploring different casks, distilleries, and regions, and sharing bottles with friends. Over time, that curiosity became a collection. Tastings turned into traditions. Bottles marked milestones: birthdays, future celebrations, and memories not yet made.

Then came the question familiar to many of us:

Where do I keep them all?

At first, it was fun. A bottle here, another there. But the collection grew — past the cupboard, the wardrobe, under the bed. Sound familiar?

As it grew, so did its value — emotionally and financially. Some bottles were set aside for my children’s 18th birthdays. A special gift for a nephew. One for my own 50th. These weren’t just bottles anymore — they were moments in waiting.

I explored storage options. Self-storage felt clunky and expensive. I tried a bonded wine warehouse — and regretted it. Bottles came back dusty, boxes creased, labels stickered. It was storage built for volume, not value. They didn’t understand whisky. They understood pallets.

Then my house flooded.

Even with specialist insurance, the claim didn’t cover cosmetic damage — only leaks or breakages. It turns out, even “specialist” policies don’t always protect what matters most to collectors: condition and provenance.
